Pro Tips: Cleaning Your Bearings

Wheel bearings are one of the most important component to any moving vehicle. They serve as the mounting mechanism for wheels and enable wheels to spin free while attached to the board. With that, it is always good to check your bearings for debris, excess grease, or even rust from riding in the rain. Here’s a workflow you can use to clean and maintain your bearings in order to keep them in tip top shape:

  1. BoardUp® trucks require a 1/2 inch wrench in order remove the nut at the end of each wheel. Use the wrench to take each nut off and keep them in a clean place. Once you’ve unscrewed each one, all of the wheels can come off.
  2. Each wheel is sandwiched by two ABEC-7 bearings. You can these them out by safely driving a screw driver through the center to pop one out at a time. Be sure to keep an eye out for the two washers in front of the bearings as well.
  3. Use a paper towel to wipe the bearing clean of any dirt and debris.
  4. Spray a lubricant (such as WD-40) onto each bearing and let the liquid seep through. After a minute or two, use a clean paper towel to dab any excess lubricant.
  5. Now that the bearings are clean and re-lubricated, assemble the wheel back to the board in reverse order (make sure to include the washers!) and you’re good to go.

Hopefully this method works for you and gives you a smooth ride. If you have any questions on this process or have recommendations we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out via our contact page HERE.
